my first Chinese interview

For those who can read Chinese, I present to you my first Chinese interview, with World Journal LA!

And because Google is so darn cool, here’s an English translation. It’s a bit wonky, but you should get the gist of it. It also came out really blunt so…just keep in mind that it’s a literal direct translation.

Premiere of “Bait & Switch”

FRIDAY, MARCH 5 – “Bait & Switch” was premiered at the SAG Foundation Actors Center. I had a supporting role in this comedic short film as the Mandarin-speaking love interest. Here’s the Question & Answer that writer Ed Moy wrote about me for the examiner. http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-4211-LA-Asian-American-Movie-Examiner~y2010m3d7-QA-with-actress-Tiffany-Shiau

LA Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade

On February 20, I got the chance to be on my first float ever! With heels, dress, sash, crown…and one tired right arm from waving so much. See pictures below as we ride on a customized float through the streets of Los Angeles Chinatown to promote the Taiwanese culture while celebrating Lunar New Year. And yes, that is a paper mache tiger next to me. Year of the Tiger!

Special thanks to Virgil Hidalgo for transportation and Wesley Wong for photographing.

K-Town

K-Town, the mockumentary by Steve Royall that asks “Why are Asians so popular?”, has been completed and submitted to festivals. Credits on IMDB. I had a supporting role in this project as the sensible, well-behaved Asian daughter who was dating a nice Asian doctor and doing my part to keep my Asian parents happy with my dating selection. Yes, did I mention it was a mock documentary?

2009 Miss Taiwanese-American Pageant

Date:  Sunday, August 16, 2009
Venue: Pacific Palms Resort in La Puente, CA (venue)
Host: Taiwan Center Foundation of Greater Los Angeles (info)

My mom’s been bugging me for a while to do a pageant. Usually I brush her off and tell her (and myself) “I’m not a pageant type of girl!” But this time I figured I would do it. My window of opportunity to compete in a beauty pageant is not indefinite and this would be something new to experience. I placed as 5th Princess. I’m glad I did it, but I wouldn’t have been able to do so without the support of my family and friends. Enjoy the photos!

Special thanks to: my brother (for being the photographer), Emily (for being the cinematographer), my great-aunt (for being my biggest supporter), and my mother (for being everything else that I needed).

Reel is done and online!

I gave myself a goal of finishing my reel by the end of January 2009 and yes, it is finally done! It’s 1 minute and 40 seconds and it includes clips from the web series “Venice Boardwalk” directed by Randall Fontana, and the two short films: “Game Night” directed by Emily Blake and “The Brothers” directed by Mike Dominguez. I used Pinnacle Studio b/c it was less memory-intensive, but I wasn’t happy with the audio glitches that kept on recurring when I converted the Studio project to a movie file. It always occurred in the “Game Night” clip. It took many frustrated attempts (and tons of wishful thinking/praying) before I finally got a glitch-free file. Anyways, not my recommended movie editing tool. Maybe next time I’ll invest the time and memory resources to using Adobe Premiere. By the way, I don’t have a MAC so FinalCut Pro is not an option.

“New Traditions” on August 21 and 23

I will be performing in the theater show “New Traditions” on August 21 (Thursday) and August 23 (Saturday) directed by John Miyasaki. I’m super excited about this for two reasons: (1) It’s been over a year since I did my last theater show, and (2) This is not a “traditional” theater show with Act 1, Act 2, etc. This is a collection of short pieces – ranging from monologues to small group pieces to large ensemble pieces. I am a part of all of them; I will be delivering my monologue at the beginning of the second act.

Show information
8:00PM on August 21 (Thursday) and August 23 (Saturday) at Studio/Stage (http://www.studio-stage.com/info.php) located at 520 North Western Avenue, Los Angeles, 90004.

Ticket information
Pre-sale price is $15. Otherwise, it is $20 at the door. We expect to sell out on both nights so please buy your tickets from me before August 20. I have tickets for Thursday and Saturday. Industry members (agents, casting directors, etc.) will be comped, but I need to know by August 17 which night you will be attending so that my director can reserve seats.

BACKGROUND ON THE PRODUCTION

Founded in 1990 by John Miyasaki, hereandnow theatre company began as a touring company that brought its original show to festivals and college venues across the nation. The shows consist of a combination of storytelling, improvisation, and scripted pieces based on personal and community issues.

In 1998, hereandnow theatre company became Artists-in-Residence at East Los Angeles College and produced original works such as “Romeo & Juliet: Pinoy/Pinay Style” in 1998 and 1999, the world premieres of “Fentor,” and “A Nickel’s Worth,” both by Jason Fong, and “Boba Stories: Tales from the hereandnow Kitchen” in which Backstage West raved, “ Personal and Touching. A Many Layered look at Asian American experiences in Los Angeles.” Miyasaki also received praise for his “expert staging” in LA Weekly.

During its residency at East Los Angeles College, Miyasaki then began to workshop with a group of ambitious and talented students and Teatro Nueva Alma was born.

Their first show, “Cries for the Soul,” was met with overwhelming positive response from its sold-out performances. The beginning of 2006 brought both companies to partner with the Armory Center for the Arts and found a home at the Armory Center Northwest. hereandnow and Teatro celebrated their new home with “Foreword: A Housewarming” featuring a collage of works collected over the years of collaboration and in which the Los Angeles Times wrote, ” Notable and appealing . . .John Miyasaki weaves the personal ancedotes and histories of two endearing casts.” Both hereandnow theatre company and Teatro Nueva Alma are ensemble-based companies committed to creating innovative, exciting, new projects based on the idea that everyone has a story to tell.
